When I first arrived in the U.S. I didn’t understand the appeal of beanies. I never thought that finishing off a winter ensemble with a slouchy knit beanie would give me major cool points in fashion and style.
When I first tried one on I was not impressed. It took awhile to realize that the type, color, and fabric of the beanie made a huge difference in whether it met my approval or not. And now that I have found a combination that works for me, I’m rocking my beanie and enjoying it!
Beanies For Women
Perfect for any woman, even in her 40’s (ahem!) if properly worn, a cute and stylish beanie can make a wonderful complementary piece to your outdoor look. But finding the right one can be a bit tricky.
Womens Beanies: Choosing The Fabric
It’s important to consider what fabric is best, and since a beanie sits so close to your face, never choose a cheap fabric that might irritate your skin. Many comfortable and cozy beanies for women are available, granting your options in style and warmth.
▪Merino Wool Beanies
The tried-and-true standard in warm winter gear, beanies made of wool offer the utmost in comfort and warmth.
▪Fleece and Polyester Beanies
Beanies made of fleece or a polyester blend are great for use in outdoor athletic activities. They are less bulky than natural fibers, meaning they offer the contoured design preferable to many outdoor sports enthusiasts.
▪Knit and Non-Performance Wool Beanies
These are the chunky and cable-knit beanies populating the fashion scene in cold weather regions. They’ll keep your head warm, but may make design a priority over warmth.
Womens Beanies: Choosing The Color
Outfit 1: Knit Beanie with Faux Fur Pompom . Jacket . Dress
Outfit 2: H & M Rib-knit Hat . Coat . Top . Scarf
Outfit 3: Halogen Slouchy Cashmere Beanie . Sweater . Poncho . Pants
Outfit 4: UO Knot-Front Knit Beanie . Jacket . Pants
Another important decision to make when picking a new beanie is the color or design to get. You’ll want to stick with your outfit’s color story. Here are some ways to pair the color of your beanie with your outfit:
▪ Choose a shade that is part of your outfit’s color family.
▪ Pair the colors of your beanie with one piece of your outfit. It can be with your coat or any other accessories you’re wearing.
▪ A bold color can be a good option to make a neutral outfit more exciting.
▪ If your coat has a colorful printed design, choose a neutral or solid colored beanie.
Types of Womens Beanies:
Here are some of the types of beanies for women I have tried and a few others I would like to try in the near future:
CUFFLESS BEANIES FOR WOMEN
Cuffless beanies are the most common beanies you’ll find in clothing stores today. These are womens beanies that are one exact length from the top to the bottom edge, meaning you won’t have any extra to roll up. This is a great style of beanie to wear when the weather is moderately cold, but not near freezing as your head won’t get overheated from extra fabric being rolled up. They are often found in solid colors like black, navy blue, and dark brown but also come in contrasting colors, like red, yellow, and white stripes, or with patterns.
The Chenille Ribbed Beanie above is a super cozy yet sophisticated beanie that would go perfectly with a long wool coat.
You can even find some fun, playful designs like animal ears or faces like the soft and cozy Cable Knit Kitty Beanie, which would be perfect for younger women or teens.
CUFFED BEANIES FOR WOMEN
This is a perfect style for when you’re right in the thick of winter, braving the blowing snow and frigid temperatures. It’s a great choice in warmth and comfort for women with short hair, or those sporting a low ponytail.
The Urban Outfitters Fisherman Beanie is a cozy beanie made of elastic and acrylic, meaning you’ll get a great fit that won’t stretch out over time.
For the style featured above, commonly known as the Fisherman style, roll the cuff twice with smaller fold and then adjust toward your crown, highlighting your front bangs and creating a look that says you’re ready for a day on the high seas. This Madewell Skrallan features a wide fold-over cuff to channel the laid-back vibe of a fisherman hat.
The other womens beanies shown here are all great options for when you’re trying to sport a hipster look. Very trendy color options and super warm fabric beanie mean these would keep you looking stylish even in the coldest weather.
BOBBLE BEANIES FOR WOMEN
Not just a hat for kids anymore, the bobble beanie is making itself a popular option for adults as well. A bobble hat can be simply defined as an oftentimes knitted hat with a “ball” on top, like a pom pom or fur poof. They come in a wide range of colors and patterns, with solid colors an easy find in many stores.
The UGG Water Resistant Quilted Hat above is a very unique option that’s both functional and fashionable. It’s an attention-getter that is perfect for areas with lots of snowfall.
The Chunky Knit Faux Fur Pompom Beanie is another trendy option that would look great paired with a puffy jacket or peacoat, as you can definitely dress it up or down.
And the Treasure & Bond Chunky Knit Pom Beanie is knit option minus the fur, that is fitted and elastic, perfectly forming to your head to keep you warm and toasty. Suitable for most face shapes, especially oval or oblong, a bobble hat is a fun choice to wear on your next venture outdoors!
SLOUCHY BEANIE FOR WOMEN
Slouchy beanies are great when you’re finishing off a laid-back look. They’re an especially popular option in the fall when the weather isn’t demanding a more fitted hat. Pair them with a sweatshirt or flannel and you’ve accomplished a hip, relaxed look.
The All Day Every Day Slouchy Beanie is a great choice for a beanie (that’s available in an array of colors) you can wear while hanging out at a coffeeshop with your friends or when walking your dog around the block. Make sure to find one that has enough fabric to lay back and isn’t standing straight up atop your head. Also, look for one one with elasticity around the edge to ensure it doesn’t become too loose and fall off.
These type of womens beanies come in many colors and designs, but finding one in a neutral tone will enable you to pair it with anything in your fall through spring wardrobe.
The Halogen Slouchy Cashmere Beanie is just the beanie for multi-seasonal wear and its super soft and comfortable, too. It’s available in 10 different colors, so grab a few colors to match your seasonal standout pieces!
KNOT-FRONT OR TURBAN STYLE BEANIE FOR WOMEN
A front-knot or turban style beanie is at the height of popular fashion accessories for the winter season. They are a great way to add some detail to your outerwear look without overpowering the entire outfit.
While not ideal for use while having fun out and about in the snow, they are a great choice for wearing in the city or when you’re running errands around town. These fashionable beanies for women are available in a wide variety of colors and fabrics, proving to be a versatile item to complete your wintery look.
You’ll be sure to get compliments with the boho-chic Knot-Front Knit Beanie. The knotted detailing of this beanie makes it a wonderful complementary piece to any dressed-up look. The ASOS New Rib Basic Knot Front Hat is also a versatile and stylish beanie that can really dress up an outerwear look.
Womens Beanies: Tips On How To Wear
With all of the great styles of womens beanies available, here are numerous ways to wear one this winter:
▪For a classic look, as with a cuffless beanie, just pull the hat down over your head, a little short of hitting your eyebrows.
▪For fending off the winter chill, roll the cuff up, like with the cuffed beanie, to provide extra warmth. This way it should be able to cover your ears, head, and neck, keeping you well insulated against extreme temperatures.
▪Finally, you can wear the beanie pulled back higher on your head, as done with the slouchy beanie. This is a great way to showcase your bangs, but won’t keep your ears covered.
With so many different kinds of womens beanies, you’re sure to find the perfect one that fits your sense of style while providing warmth during the long months of winter. Who knows, with choices like these you may end up with quite a collection by the start of spring.
